In the past -- especially on some windows desktops -- I have had real performance issues when I get a lot of files in a single directory. The OS would be very slow in listing such a directory (MUCH slower than would be justified by the 1000+ file names) and rendering html from said directory would be very slow due to long times to retrieve files.
I've heard that certain linux file system options can list literally millions of files in a single directory with no real performance problems. I was wondering how to find out what filesystem might be used for my disks/partitions and also perhaps a bit more info on the various linux file system options.
