Weird character displaying

Hi,

I am using the gd library to make an image of some text. The string of text comes from a textarea in a form. What's weird is I get a character that looks almost like a r and then it has a superscript v and a subscript t. This character appears anywhere that a paragraph is ended in the textarea. I'm just wondering what it is and how to remove it. An image of it is attached below.

I've not seen that before. My guess is that it is a carriage-return and/or newline character. You could try filtering the input data with something like:

$filtered_text = preg_replace('/[\r\n]+/', ' ', trim($_POST['text']));

Ya i tried filtering the \r\n with str_replace, and that did nothing. I'll try the preg tho and see if that works.

Are you passing a UTF-8 string to the GD function ? I'm not sure that GD really likes UTF-8... (just a possibility)

That is possible, what exactly does utf-8 mean? Or how would I change the string to not be utf-8?

UPDATE: I tried the preg function, and that worked. Don't know why str_replace didn't work. Also on a side note, I tried utf_encode and decode and those had no effect.
