Help for a noob...

Hi All.

I could have taken the easy way out and paid someone to do some work for me, (I may still do so), but I need to achieve the following (by myself) so I can learn at the same time.

We have access to a database using an array for our members to check their telephone exchange to see what ADSL services are available to them.

What I want to achieve:

The attenuation of their telephone line as shown by the router, and their present line speed in mb.

This needs to recorded in 2 ways:

By IP address - 1) sorted into one ISP's results 2)all others

I have set up the databases, and I have the array script, how do I get the webpage checker to record the data collected into the database?

Once this is sorted I need to be able to produce graphs based on the stats from the database.

1) Is this possible

2) Is it really beyond my scope and should I pay someone?

1. No, it is not possible. You can't get the maximum speed since people might do other things at the same time, there may be slow routing or you don't have enough speed on the connection to get the clients speed. And I don't think it is possible to get the speed if the client doesn't have JavaScript turned on. But I'm not sure about that. Having said that, you can get a pretty good idea about the speed.

2. If it is beyond your scope is impossible to say. If you don't know programming at all I think that you should start by going through a few tutorials (PHP, databases, JavaScript) and then start doing small things, like a register of your music. Once you have managed to do that you are probably ready to see if it is beyond your scope or not.
