301 redirects

I have a site which has many pages indexed for example in Google. I have redesigned the site to include friendly url's etc so my old page:

contactus.php now with the help of mod_rewrite rediects to /contact-us/

However, the php file is still the same name as the one that is indexed in Google (contactus.php), so when users find the old indexed link on Google and click it, they are sent to www.mysite.com/contactus.php and the URL is not redirected to the friendly URL.

Can someone explain how I get the permanent redirect to work? As you can imageine I have many pages that are affected by this throughout the site.

Why don't you add a section in the top of the file that checks against the value in $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']?

if ( false === strpos($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'], '/contact-us/') )
{
   header('Location: http://www.mysite.com/contact-us/');
   exit;
}

This might not be the best way, but it should point you in the right direction.
