Saving picture url to database

Hey, im new here, just signed up because I sometimes need help with php, and the other site I use isn't nearly as active as this one, so im hoping I can get better help here.

My current problem is, I want to save picture URL's from a search, to my database. The problem is, the pictures im searching for don't exist on my site, but rather various other sites. My searcher sort of works, at least, for how I have it searching anyway.

My server (im using a free one), doesn't allow me to get off site image information, such as height and width information. I think its the allow_url_fopen thing that I need set to "On", and my host currently has it set to Off.

Is there anyway I can get around that? I think I need to, to get my pictures to save to the database according to the variables I specify (if the image dimensions are greater than 24 x 24).

If theres no way to do that, then can someone recommend me a free host, that gives mysql database support, and php support, that allows url_fopen?

I don't think the url_fopen would matter. You might be able to get file size information (bytes) via a [man]cURL[/man] or [man]FTP[/man] request; but I suspect the only way to get actual image dimensions would be to actually grab the file, then run it through the GD [man]getimagesize[/man] function.

Where, heres what I was trying to do on my server:

$image = $_POST['image'];
$size = getimagesize($image);
$w = $size[0];
$h = $size[1];
 if ($w > 24 && $h > 24) {
 mysql_query("INSERT INTO `pictures` (`url`) VALUES ('".$image."') ");
}

But that doesn't work. I tried to narrow down the problem by echoing out $w and $h, and it won't return any value, its just blank. I posted this on another site, and they said that I had to have url_fopen on or something like that, so thats why I asked about that.

Sorry qphqp, I don't really understand how that could be useful for me. I would have to show you how my page works for you to really understand it. Heres a picture of how its searching for the pictures:

So, as you can see, the search thing, it searches through a set of predefined image links, and from there, I need my script to sift through the valid ones, and save the URLs to my database.

Is that possible?

for the first message i have no idea but in your second message i taught you are trying to resize your images uploaded so i think it can be useful if not it is not problem.

Oh, sorry no. The Image Dimensions are what im using to determine if an Image is Invalid. When an Image doesn't load up, the Broken Image icon is 24 x 24. So my script decides whats valid and what isn't, based on the image size. If its Greater than 24 x 24, its considered Valid, otherwise, Invalid.

If you want to get the image dimensions of a file on a remote server, your two options are:

Grab the image (such as with the [man]FTP[/man] functions), and run the [man]getimagesize/man function against the retrieved copy on your server.
Call some script on the target server that can return the image size properties to your script.

The non-option that will not work is running getimagesize() on your server against a remote file via a URL file specification. It only works on files on your local filesystem.

ohhh... that explains it alot better than the other guy. He said I could just use it on any picture.

So is there anyway I can do what im trying to do, without downloading the image onto my server? Because not all the images my search thing returns will be an image, most will probably be broken links, and I don't want to try to download all the broken ones too.

To the best of my knowledge: no. The only way to get the dimensions will be to actually download the image to your server so that you can read the file and get its attributes.

Ok well, I may let this thread die and make another one with my other question, unless you just wanna help me with this real quick:

Is there a way I can have it auto-download all the pictures my search returns, figure out the image dimensions, and if they are <= 24, delete them? If so, would you mind showing me?
