Website Performance Profiling

Is there any way to profile your website and see exactly what components are taking the longest amounts of time to load?

The problem arises from our use of a commercial product, and having talked with other members of the user group we all experience high load times. generally from 3 - 11secs.

We are trying to narrow down whether this is a hosting issue, or an sql issue etc.

We have been tracking a couple different sites (all running the same software including the company that created it) and have activity stats as far as what times high load were experienced and how many users were on the site at that point. But are really looking to be able to say, X component be it an image or a query is taking the most time.

Xdebug is a program which can be used for this. It can be configured to create a file which details the time taken for every action taken in a script. The file can then be anaylsed with a program such as KCacheGrind.

Get it working on production-grade hardware in a test environment, then either instrument it manually (e.g. lots of calls to microtime)

OR

use something like APD which can profile PHP execution.

Don't deploy APD or similar iffy zend extensions into production!]

I've used APD in the past.
