.htaccess Password Protecting a directory

Hello, I've got a quick question I think

I want to password protect a directory, and I'd like to encrypt the password. I've seen several sites that do this....laughing....but this seems pointless because
1. They know where I came from most likely
2. I'm just giving them my login and password info

So, how do I encrypt my password for .htaccess without know what hash is being used. I've seen a couple and it's not md5 and it doesn't look like sha1 or crypt....

so how can I crypt my password my self?
