How to receive a text from from a different website

Hello,

I am not sure how to do the following. I know someone who has a website
that can generate a text file on there site and I would like to have them pass
the text file to me. I am just wondering if you have to handle receiving the
file differently than if you have the tag

I just would like to understand how the file would be passed from one website
to another and what I need to do to receive the file and then save it to
a directory on the webhost for my domain.

There are a couple ways:

1.) rsync which is a linux command can copy from server to server. It's much like a backup feature.
2.) [man]file_get_contents[/man] can be utilized. If the url_fopen_wrappers are enabled in php.ini, you can just enter the URL to the txt file, and that will read the contents of it into a string which you can then write to a local text file. You can also use fopen and fread or file.

Or setup a script on your website which processes a normal file upload and have the other site use something like [man]cURL[/man] to send the file to your web script.

I don't know your requirements or data format, or experience with knowing how to parse text data. But this is a perfect example of why XML should be used as the native data format. If you need to get at locations within the text file, it will be a much more harder endeavor than using XML/XSLT/XQuery.
