I have a string "/web/sitename/htdocs/members.sitename.net/area3/images/hotshots/2168/2168H001.JPG"

I need to grab only the filename off the end. The filename and the directory will change in length frequently(but the number of directories will be constant). I think the best way will be to use ereg_replace and replace everything before the 9th forward slash with nothing.

ereg_replace('^/././././././././', "", $file);

But that obviously isn't working

I think I got it. This seems to work

ereg_replace('^{/.+/.+/.+/.+/.+/.+/.+/.+/',} "", $file);

First: I think that you're suppose to use preg instead of ereg (because preg is faster and stuff).

Secondly: I think that you could use basename (http://us.php.net/basename) for your situation.

[man]basename/man is definitely the way to go, but if you wanted to do it with a regex, this would be simpler:

$filename = preg_replace('#^.*/#', '', $file);
