preg_replace warning mystery

Is there anything wrong with this line -

$tags = preg_replace("§[^{a-zA-Z0-9_]§","} ",$tags);

This has worked for me for a long time - until today! Now it gives - "Warning: preg_replace(): Unknown modifier '§' ..."

I can't think what else has changed that could have this as a knock on effect!?

My guess is because PHP got updated and now it doesn't like non-ascii characters as the delimiter, which would make sense to do to me if I was a core PHP developer.

Have a look at the file in your version control system, see if its encoding has been changed. That's to say, assuming that the version of PHP you use has not been changed without your permissions and knowledge, which it should never be.

Even a minor version change needs thorough testing.

Runs OK for me under PHP 5.2.1 running on Windows Vista.
