php/MySQL and ASP (newbie question).

Hi,

Apologies in advance if this thread has been posted in the wrong place.

I'm interested in learning php/MySQL and ASP and want to ask whether or not ASP is similar to php and if it's generally considered better to have a go at learning php prior to learning ASP.

Regarding ASP web-sites is the language ASP.net or ASP (not sure if there's a difference)?. Also can ASP or ASP.net web-sites be written locally and hosted locally for testing purposes prior to FTP'ing to web-space?.

Can anyone recommend any good books for newbies who are wanting a crash course study of php/MySQL and ASP?.

They are only similiar in that they are typically used for web programming. ASP is a technology used in conjunction with certain programming/scripting languages to generate dynamic web pages, and PHP is a programming/scripting language used to do the same.

No. If you want to learn PHP, learn PHP. If you want to learn ASP, learn ASP. Learning how to reason, solve problems and program would be better in the long run than learning a specific language or technology.

Some members of this community (I am not one of them) wrote Beginning PHP5, Apache, and MySQL Web Development though I cannot vouch for how good the book really is (they did not give me a complementary copy, heheh). Practical PHP Programming is an online book to consider. Ultimately the reference you will come to rely on for PHP is the PHP Manual.

about arabic charset

Thanx for your mail.
Still i am facing the same problem . According to your mail firstly i deleted all records from my table in MySQL database. and i changed characterset utf8_unicode_ci and i also changed the php.in file as default_charset = "UTF-8".
the encoding is utf-8 and i also added <meta> with encoding utf-8.
but after insertin arabic character i saw the record as 1233Ù„ï using phpmyadmin.
here is my phpinfo() infomation. So can you help me to solve this problem. i am waiting for your response.
