AM/PM time conversion

I've been trying for at least a day now to convert the following time format to GMT time:
3:00 PM ET

I don't need to worry about daylight savings because that is adjusted for in the time before it is entered so -07:00 will work fine to calculate GMT. Is there anything I can use in php to make this happen?

$gmtime = gmdate('h:i A \G\M\T', strtotime(date('Y/m/d ').substr($time,0,-3)));
echo $gmtime;

Thanks for the reply! Actually I need to get it into UTC, I've tried changing that -3 to other values and I just can't seem to get it to work properly...

GMT is the abbreviation the general public uses to refer to Coordinated Universal Time.

In other words GMT == UTC.
