what would make a script just halt

I'm trying to debug a script and I can't figure out why its just halting. No errors and I put markers in so I know its randomly stopping in different parts. But there's no errors and I'm making it report errors, I upped the memory limit to 64mb but I notice it gets to about 5mb max, i set the max_execution_time to 1200 and set_time_limit to 900. and it halts after about 8 min as if I hit the stop button on my browser.

I know the server is being maxxed out, the website gets like 20k visitors and they only have 1 server and these reports are pretty big. but how can i find out why its halting?

I suppose the first thing I would do is look at any loops you have and check them carefully for any possibilities of infinite looping. Other than that, it's hard to say without knowing more about the actual script.
