Script or PHP Setup Problem

I downloaded a web form php script from thesitewizard.com and tested and received the following error:
Why do I see this cryptic text "$headersep . "Reply-To: \"$name\" <$email>" . [...etc...] header( "Location: $thankyouurl" ); exit ; ?>"?

I believe this is because our mail server is not setup correctly to handle the email.

I was asked to try a php file that didn't involve email. I downloaded a counter from http://www.free-php-scripts.net/P/Simple_Counter and that isn't working either. The counter simply doesn't show up on the page.

Any recommendations to find out if these are scripting error or if the PHP configuration was not setup correctly?

Have you tried a simple php script?

eg.
<?php echo "hello world" ?>

Are you using a host or trying to run it on your PC?

We have our own web server.

That is the php script- what do I use in the html file?

I made that the php file and typed the location of that php name in my browser and that worked.

It looks like you missed an opening <?php tag in the first file.

That's the error I receive. I checked the downloaded form script and the <?php tag is there. Does it seem strange that I downloaded two separate - should be simple modifications- scripts and neither are working? Should a visitor counter work if the simple test you gave me worked?

The counter only works on the pages that include it.
