I have a table with a number of rows...how can i get a specific row from the last row?

What do you mean? As in you want to get the nth row counting from the end?

Note that for a relational database the order of rows returned from a query is not guaranteed unless there is an ORDER BY.

I want the last row (i'm using ORDER BY id)

It depends on your DBMS, but you may be able to use ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT 1

Lets say i have an ID column, but no auto_increment... how can i check the db for the last inserted ID number, in order to do something like $newentry = $last + 1;

FROM `table`
ORDER BY `id` DESC
LIMIT 0,1

Then just grab the result, and increment by one. However, with auto-incrementing, it's much easier....

yes i know...but is it possible to have two columns with auto_increment?

one more thing...i'm trying to insert a value like 00025 into my db but it will change it to 25. is there a way to keep those 000?

1.) Yes it's possible to have multiple columns with auto_increment.

2.) You can define whatever number format you want. You'd be best to just use [man]str_pad[/man](column/string, 5, '0', STR_PAD_LEFT); to pad the number to be 00025 or 00001 or 00123 😉

1) this is what i get when using a second column with auto_increment: #1075 - Incorrect table definition; there can be only one auto column and it must be defined as a key
2) this will store the value in my db as 00012 or it will just convert it when retrieving it?

1.) Okay, perhaps I misread something earlier. My bad.

2.) Depends on how you define the column in the DB. If you define it as INTEGER then it strips the preceding 0s. If you define it as text (which would be stupid) it should keep the preceding 0s. Your best bet (for speed) is to store it as an INTEGER and pad it in PHP.

i think i'l define the column as text as i need to export the db into excel and the specific number has to be a 5 digit number...
