Placement in Order - Dynamically

Hi,

First off, my sincerest apologies for posting a new thread. I've searched through this forum and still not found the answer (I'm not wholly sure what I should be looking for, tbf)

My request is simple... I'm hoping the answer will be too.

I want to dynamically index "teams".. which I've managed to do for outputting them onto a table. My issue is producing some kind of linkage between them.

Place Team Points
1 Team A 300
2 Team B 250
3 Team C 225
4 Team D 210
5 Team E 201

The place is determined by the Points field, and generated on the fly. That works beautifully.

What I'm trying to do is work out the place difference. e.g. Team D is 3 places below Team A. Team B is one place above team C. I am having trouble determining the array I need to use to create the numbers I need.

Help anyone?

(Assume that the fields are called Team and Points in this example, and yes, I have simplified this up a LOT for posting to make the message as clear as possible... it's the array I'm having trouble with)

sub-note... the place difference is going to be written to a database field after creation.

Maybe you could use a two dimensional array

$team[1]["Team A"] = 300;

then you could sort by the index or value?

hmm... that would be a one off array, I'm thinking?

If that's the case it wouldn't work, the whole table is dynamic and could have changed by tomorrow, so the array would be useless. Or am I missing something?

Right, think I might have this one taped (amazing what walking away for a bit will do)

On retrieval of the information (ie when someone views the table on the page) it then writes the places to another table, effectively being the temporary placings table, which is then used for refering to the data. Bish bosh, job sorted...
