I'm completely fresh to the unix world and I've run in to a small problem.
I'm running emacs on a FreeBSD 6.2-release-p4 server over SSH from a Win XP machine using OpenSSH. For some reason I can't use C-space to set a mark, but other combinations with control works, such as C-s. As I understand it, C-space is the default emacs key combination for setting a mark but perhaps I'm misstaken. Would it be possible to edit .emacs somehow to enable this behaviour?
Also, how do I enable syntax highlighting by default?
Any direct input or references to relevant documentation or man pages would be appreciated as I've not been able to find what I need.
