[RESOLVED] Wrong quotes being submited

Hi,

All of a sudden, for some strange reason, my submission form is getting the wrong quotes and apostrophes formats when I do a copy-and-paste.

I only noticed the problem when I looked it in the website itself and there were a bunch of funny looking characters.

The only way I can submit my articles right now is to manually change every quotes from:

“She's got a national presence and this is becoming a national primary.”

To:

"She's got a national presence and this is becoming a national primary."

What the heck happened?

Are you using a word processor such as MS Word to create the text? If so, you probably have "smart quotes" (or whatever they call it) enabled, converting your " characters into direction quotes.

PS: you could dynamically replace them with normal quotes at runtime using preg_replace:

$text = "“She's got a national presence and this is becoming a national primary.”";
echo preg_replace('/[\x93\x94]/', '"', $text);

No, I'm not using a word processor for editing. I just input directly into a form.
The funny thing is that it never happened before an it just happens in certain pages.

The quotes in this page, "I heard where it's a misery wrapped in an enema. That doesn't sound too good.", for example is just fine if I do a copy and paste. Both the quotes and the apostrophe in doesn't is fine.

And yeh.. unfortunately the code above did not do the trick. 🙁

Use a hex editor to determine what exactly those strange quotes are, and then post back the number here.

Those would appear to be multi-byte Unicode characters, which native PHP does not yet deal with. (You would need to use the [man]MBString[/man] functions to cope with it.) You might want to "suggest" that your form limit the character set it will transmit:

<form action="foobar.php" method="post" [color=red]accept-charset="ISO-8859-1"[/color]>

Honestly, after trying so many different things, I said to myself, I will do what he's saying but I doubt it will work. But, what do you know???
