[RESOLVED] Making a link

I am trying to make a link in my webpage. The item i am linking to is in a directory outside my root.

I have tried all ways to get it to work but I am totally lost.

This was my last attempt.

	  echo '<a href="/home/sites/mydomain/directoryname/something.pdf">item to download</a>' ;
?>

I did at first try making a vriable which is held in a config file but this didnt work either.

I am sure this is dead easy for someone but am totally confused.

Please could someone help me out

Are you really trying to create link to a file outside your document root?
If so, then you can't do it barely just like that. Your webserver won't allow such thing.

You will need a php script to handle such thing. Something like this:

<?php
      echo '<a href="download.php?file=something.pdf">item to download</a>' ;
?> 

There are tons examples of this download script. Just do a search on google for "php download script" and you will find it immediately.
