MySQL DB and Website on different servers

localhost is not the option I need. I am trying to figure out what goes into my

$dbhost = 'localhost';

instead of 'localhost'

IP address does not work, nor does 'IP address:port'

Ive also tried whatever.com but that doesn't seem to work either.

I keep getting the dreaded "Access denied for user 'xxxxxxx'@'www.whatever.com' (using password: YES)

The user has full privledges. As far as I can tell I am not firewalled. Somebody else checked as well and found no reason why I should be denied.

Are you sure the account is setup for www.whatever.com and not localhost/127.0.0.1.

on Linux you have 3 levels( root as an example )

root@localhost - socket connection, networking can be disabled for more security.
root@127.0.0.1 - loopback network card connection - Used mostly when tunneling or instead of the socket on windows.
root@* - Everywhere else. ( eg. [e-mail] would restrict it to the other server )

A GRANT has to be done for all of them if you require all of them.

eg.
GRANT ALL ON monkeydb.* TO 'monkey'@'www.whatever.com' IDENTIFIED BY 'bananas';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
