The most annoying thing about php

This is got to be the most annoying aspect of php. Quotes and double quotes. I am running around the house ripping my hair out and throwing tantrums for the past hour or more. I just cannot get past this error.

echo "<td width='70%' class='list' align='left'><? echo $data['license_key']; ?></td>\n";

The problem is here, ><? echo $data['license_key']; ?>

I have tried every possible combination of quotes and double quotes and still keep getting this error.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE, expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or T_NUM_STRING

Since you are using echo I guess that you are already in a php block. Then you can't create a new one inside the string. Any of these solutions should work:

echo "<td width='70%' class='list' align='left'>$data[license_key]</td>\n";

echo "<td width='70%' class='list' align='left'>" . $data['license_key'] . "</td>\n";

[edit]Btw, I don't agree that this is the most annoying thing about PHP. The most annoying thing is that you can't create functions with the same name but different number of input variables[/edit]

If you are really annoyed with QUOTES AND DOUBLE QUOTES , then you can use heredoc syntax (<<<) . It will make you much easier in coding .
As for the above problem using echo , you can use it like this ..

<?php
$data['license_key']="Paul";
echo "<td width='70%' class='list' align='left'> {$data['license_key'] }</td>\n";
?>

My solution to your issue is to always use single quotes in my echo statements - that way any HTML I output still gets double quotes, and it's easier for me to escape a single quote than work out which quote goes where.

echo '<td width="70%" class="list" align="left">'.$data['license_key'].'</td>'."\n";

The only thing that needs to be double quotes is the new-line, so that it gets processed properly. Don't forget to mark this resolved once you've picked a soultion. 😃

This is EXACTLY how I do my PHP coding, too.
And I think not I want to change.

You can easily emulate this with one function:

function fooBar() {
    $num_params = func_num_args();

if($num_params == 1) {
    // 1 param
} elseif($num_params == 2) {

True. There is only two things that I don't like about that way of doing it:

I have to have it all in one function.
It feels like a workaround.
