mysql sort by 2 rows

To order by a, and then by b for those with the same value for a:
ORDER BY a, b

Though typically a and b are columns, or derived from columns, not rows.

here is my query but it seems to only sort by
refnumberall

$res = mysql_query("select auto_id,disp_name,refnumber,refnumberall from friend_reg_user order by refnumber,refnumberall desc limit 100");
$riders = mysql_num_rows($res);

Of course, if refnumber happens to be unique in the table, then the second sort criterion is never used.

SORT BY refnumber, refnumberall
If 2 or more items in 'refnumber' column is the same value,
then the second sort criteria 'refnumberall' will be used
to sort those with same 'refnumber'.
This is what I can understand.

So if I am correct, the most important sort directive is the first one

Basicly I have a list which shows user referral counts

the 2 coulmns I want to wort like this

refnumber shows the referrals for this month so example

name     referrals-this-month     referrals-all_time
jason                5                                 343      

sara                  2                                 2
john                  0                                23424

so once refarrals for this month get to 0 for people with 0 then it will start sorting by alltime referrals

then I guess your query is working alright
as soon as there are two people with '0'
then the second sort criteria will be used to rank them two (or three etc.)

that what I though but it doesn't work that way, it will just keep showing users with 0
