[RESOLVED] unexpected $end line 1

I am a newbie's newbie...so thanks in advance for your help, my hair is currently falling out :}

I have a captcha script that is generating the following error:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/mydomain/public_html/subdomain/mycaptcha/captcha-page.php on line 1

I understand this probably means a missing closing bracket but I'm stumped about the line 1...plus I think all open and close brackets match up...here's the php code...

I get no such error when I copy-and-paste and then run your code.

I tested you code at my server.

There was no error.

Try to remove any spaces or newline before <?php and after ?>
and save a new copy of your page.
I can not help you more, because there is no error in my copy.

Oh my. It did in fact work ... don't ask :o

however, now it is not displaying the captcha image....

the img src is this file...captcha.php...I verified it's on my server, and I verified the link is correct (here'sthe captcha.php code, fwiw):

You need to add a newline between <?php and then the sessionstart, something is making it read as one line.

You might need to make sure that your editor is saving with "UNIX line endings" or some similar setting. Or some FTP clients have a habit of doing strange things, so make sure yours is transferring the files in ASCII mode, and it may also have a line ending setting you need to tweak.

I kinda wondered about my FTP client doing strange things, even though I uploaded in ASCII...so I re-uploaded through my host file mgr and voila!
