[RESOLVED] Include function not working as per manual

If I use include("./lib/file.php") it does not work. If I use include("lib/file.php"0 it does work.

I need this to work because PHPMyadmin use this form of the include statement. I have tried different setting in PHP.ini for include_path without this making any difference. I am using PHP 5.2.4 . I get exactly the same problem when I run a test file.

Any advice on how I can get this to work would be gratefully received

What does it matter what form of include phpMyAdmin uses, if your include without the ./ indicator works fine? Let phpMyAdmin use the ./'s to it's heart's content, and you can just use include('path'). I don't know why one would work and the other wouldn't if they're in the same directory though. :/

Thanks for reply. Because includes won't work with ./ it means I cant use phpMyAdmin which I want to use. Thats why I would like this information.

AH, gotcha. Well all the ./ says is "this current directory" so if you're in phpMyAdmin's configuration files you should be able to just remove the ./ so it reads path/to/file.php instead of ./path/to/file.php, as long as they're in the same directories. Still no idea why they wouldn't work though. 🙁

Using Xitami on Windows XP.

include_path => .\;.\;C:\xitami.old\webpages => .\;.;c:\xitami.old\webpages\

Unfortunately phpmy admin has a lot of .php files all with many require_once

So I was hoping to avoid lots of editing (sigh)

Ah, well is there a version of phpMyAdmin specifically for windows? I don't ever remember, but I'm pretty sure those include paths are linux-specific, you'd need to reverse the directions of the slashes or double them (never sure 🙁 ) to make them work on windows. See if there is a windows version of phpmyadmin, perhaps

Thanks for your reply. I am sure that since the PHP manual clearly states that ./ is allowed in the path for include and that I am having this error in PHP file independant of Phpmyadmin that this is a PHP problem. I will remove PHP and re-add it. Hopefully this will solve the problem. I will update as I get more info.

The include_path setting should not matter, since the [man]include[/man] manual page states that, "If filename begins with ./ or ../, it is looked [for] only in the current working directory."

Afraid I don't have any suggestion for you, though. So far the wildcard in this situation seems to be Xitami, though I cannot imagine why it should affect how PHP is resolving file paths. I've used phpMyAdmin without any problems on both Windows XP and Vista, both with Apache (XAMPP and WAMP installations on XP and Vista, respectively).

In my book also "." should work the same as "./"
I dont know if there is any difference for Xitami. It should not be.
I havent used that server for some years.

Even if I am sure NogDog is right it shouldnt matter, (because current directory is assumed and searched first)
I would try change the php.ini setting to:

;my own current setting php.ini .. Windows XP, Apache 2.2.6
include_path = ".;C:/PEAR"

;try this:
include_path = ".;C:/xitami.old/webpages"

Out of curiosity, what happens if you place a script like this in the directory of the .php file in question:

This is the only note I have found in
in phpMyAdmin FAQ

I get errors about not being able to include a file in /lang or in /libraries.

Check php.ini, or ask your sysadmin to check it.
The include_path must contain "." somewhere in it,
and open_basedir, if used, must contain "." and "./lang"
to allow normal operation of phpMyAdmin.

No The Lib directory is at C:\xitami.old\webpages\lib.

This is where the problem seems to be. It looks like we are loosing a level at some point. ie going to .. rather than the current directory.

Have a look at cgi.force_redirect in php.ini
if I am right, for Xitami it should be 0
and you may have to set
doc_root = "c:/your/doc_root"

And I suppose you havent tried this, which I suggested some days ago

Thanks for your reply. cgi.force_redirect has always been set to 0 in my php.ini. Also I have tried include_path = ".;C:/xitami.old/webpages" without success. I have also tried include_path = "./;.;C:/xitami.old/webpages"

I will check out doc_root = "c:/your/doc_root" when I get home.

Where is phpMyAdmin? I hope it's in C:\xitami.old\webpages\phpMyAdmin

If not, try putting it there and testing it out.
