Need Help Refreshing Certain Part of Page

I need help with how to get my shoutbox I made to automatically refresh when someone posts a new shout. If anyone can just point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful!

shoutbox is often controlled by java
a submit would trigger a javascript to update the box
but there are many different shoutboxes
even PHP types

I already have one, I made it myself. I just want to add the feature of autorefresh as it is very usefull. I don't know what the exact term for the 'autorefresh' is so I cannot get accurate answers when I try googling.
