adding form values

Hello,

Im not that good at php, and i've been working on this for a while and can't seem to get it going. I have one file with form checkboxes created;

<form action="shop.php" method="post">

item 1
<input type = "checkbox" name = "item[]" value = 199.99>

item 2
<input type = "checkbox" name = "item[]" value = 20.99>

item 3
<input type = "checkbox" name = "item[]" value = 94.99>

Now I need to make another page that acts like a shopping cart and add's the values above that are selected. I've tried using;

<?php
if( isset($POST["item"]) ) {
foreach ($POST["item"] as $element) {
echo "$element";
}
}else{
echo "No values checked
";
}
?>

but I cant get them to add, can anyone please help?

First try using proper HTML syntax (values should always be quoted).

Second, nothing in your PHP code snippet suggests you're attempting to add numbers. Inside your loop, add each $element's value to some $total variable created outside of the loop.

Also, when posting PHP code, please use the board's [PHP][/PHP] bbcode syntax as it makes your code much easier to read and understand.
