Number of responses in an object question.

Let's say this is the response from my query to a web service. I know how to pick out individual items, (thanks to this forum), but how do I find out how many items were returned?

In this case it would be 8, is there some short easy way to get the number of responses in the object?

Use [man]count/man with the array.

When I do this:

echo count($response);

It returns 1, where $response is the array...

That implies that $response is the object, not the array.

By the way, could you provide more code snippets on how you are using this array? I am afraid that I am rather weak when it comes to interpreting this particular print out.

I'm not very good with objects myself, but say I want to show:

LoadsMoreStuff

I would do this:

echo $response->getFeaturedMerchantsReturn[0]->sName;

So to show all the "sName" results, I think it'd have to count the total number and then loop through it? I was wondering if there's an easier way to do that with objects...

Try a:

echo count($response->getFeaturedMerchantsReturn);

Incidentally, this is a confusing member variable name: I was confused as I read the print out as it being a variable name, but it looked like a function name. Heh.

That worked!

That $response variable came from this:

$response= $oClient->call('getFeaturedMerchants', $params8);

and I did a:

print_r($response);

to get that output.

Thanks for your help though, that's perfect. Now I can easily loop through the results. Objects are a strange new world to me, but it's slowly sinking in.

That $response variable came from this:

The web service API designer probably should have named the member variable 'featuredMerchants' instead of 'getFeaturedMerchantsReturn'. The 'get' makes it sound like a member function when it is actually a member variable.

By the way, instead of finding out the size of the array and then iterating over it with a for loop, you could use a foreach loop:

foreach ($response->getFeaturedMerchantsReturn as $featuredMerchant) {
    echo $featuredMerchant->sName;
}
