PHP Live Chat (Need new idea)

Hi All,
I need new idea for live chat mostly php chat application refresh page (using javascript or meta refresh mostly) to get chat data for chat window. Is thier any other way to handle this issue?
Yes i know about DIV, so using ajax we can update it but one question here how we know the other chatter send a message?

Hopefully i explain my question well if not then please ask me more to explain.

When the user types in some letters in the input bow, register the timestamp and send a query with AJAX saying to the server "user X is typing", and put a timeout after which another query will be sent : "user X is not typing", of course, as soon as the user types in a character, update the timeout (cancel it and redeclare it)...

Thanks Suntra But please explain me more as i understand using ajax a query will be send to database but again question here how the second user know here will be again need to refresh window to see "user typing". Can you please give a little bit scirpt so that i understand completely.
