Hi All,
My question is about live chat application.
Is this possible in php 4 or php 5 that we declare a gloabal variable or array and it will assessible to all user who's are chating from diffrent ip's (or computers) so that if one user asign this variable a value then second one will get it?

Note: Versions of Windows previous to Windows 2000 do not support shared memory. Under Windows, Shmop will only work when PHP is running as a web server module, such as Apache or IIS (CLI and CGI will not work).

its have not support for linux that's biggest problem to me

please give me any other solution.

if this is true then what does this mean?

Shmop is an easy to use set of functions that allows PHP to read, write, create and delete Unix shared memory segments.

Linux is UNIX based, therefore it is supported as stated by the php manual.

oh i found that a lot of web server does not enable it because it use share memory so this solution is not best to my application because i want to run this application on default php.ini settings.

Probably a database solution is your best option, then. Depending on what you are doing with those values, you may need to implement some table and/or column locking schemes to prevent race conditions or other confusions when multiple clients are trying to read and write data.

When we are thinking for chat application and we want to create a big application thier might be thousand of user's use this applicatoin then database especially mysql will not a best solution because a lot of idle hits dump database.

Well, if you won't use shared memory and you won't use a database, all that's left is the file system.
