Right so i've decided to get back into php!!! 😃

Take a forum for example. Say the forum has 25 threads and each page contains 10 threads. How can i display 10 threads to a page and then create a script which will then have a 'next' or page number as a link to display then next results.

In my case im spitting out 20 records from a database using a while loop. But in doing so you can imagine the page is going to end up being very long!

Could you also tell me what this sort of thing is called if anything ? lol

It is called pagination. Just search for it, there are tons of posts, articles and tutorials about it. Feel free to ask again if you get into trouble when using it.

I'd suggest you might want to extract the functionality out into a function to do your pagination for you 😉 That way, there's only one place you need to edit in order for things to "break" for pagination functionality. A simple paginator would be:

// $total is the total amount of records
// $current is the page we're on

	if($leftstart - 1 > 1)
  {
		  $out .= ' ... ';
  }
for($i=$leftstart; $i<$current; $i++)

	// The current page ;)
$out .= ' [ <strong>' . $current . '</strong> ]';

for($i=$current+1; $i<=$rightend; $i++)

bpat1434 have you always used functions? I've used them in other programming languages but never in php. I havnt developed in PHP for sometime so has php always used functions?

As far as I can remember, PHP has always had functions (though we're talking like 5 years now...) but it's had functions for quite some time.
