[RESOLVED] PHP5 include_path errors

I have Apache2/Perl5/PHP5/MySQL4.1 installed on my WinXP box as a development/testbed server for any websites I'm creating.

Whenever I run a phpinfo() script I see this line:

include_path	.;C:\php5\pear	.;C:\php5\pear

I have checked and double checked and the only php.ini file that is active is under the PHP path: e:\webserver\PHP. That php.ini file has the include_path set to:

I have also done a registry search with zero results. I'm totally at my wit's end and ready to pull whatever hair is left on this old head! Every php script that has an include line fails to run properly. The apache error log will show:

From the error message, it looks like you are trying to include a file with an absolute path of "/text.php". Try getting rid of the leading slash if you want it to include the file from either the current working directory if there, else from the include_path if not.

1. Are you absolutely certain that you're looking at the correct php.ini. Because php is picking it up from somewhere.

2. If you are looking at the correct file you may want to check at the very end of the file to make sure that the line

   include_path = .;C:\php5\pear

   hasn't been appended there.

3. You can specify your own include path at runtime with [man]set_include_path[/man]

Yes, I did check, double check and triple checked -- there is only ONE php.ini file. I finally just got too frustrated with php5 and went back to php4. Of course, that's opening up a whole new can of worms for me.

I'm not sure what's going on, but I suspect my computer has been invaded by gremlins. I need to find a top-notch gremlin remover... It's also possible that I might need to just wipe out the whole webserver folder and start from scratch... all over again.

The reason I got started with this is that I was trying to upgrade a script called The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding (TNG) from 5.x to 6.x. I have confirmed that it's not the script's fault -- loading it on my remote server, it works just fine. And THAT is why I'm sooooo frustrated!!!:mad:

Can you show us the first 6 lines or so of E:\Websites\LarleeTree\html\index.php? (I'm wondering if it's a good old "register_globals" problem, and if there is an empty variable before the file name in the the include statement. (It might be useful to compare what the register_globals setting is between the server where it works and that where it fails.)

I think that excerpt from the globallib.php file indicates a likely problem source. It is attempting to emulate register_globals if it is not turned on, but doing so by referencing the old, deprecated $HTTP*VARS arrays. You could turn on register_globals to avoid this, but realize that for a number of years now the default setting of register_globals has defaulted to off for a reason. (Poorly written code can have some security holes if it is on.) Alternatively, you could change that block of code to reference $POST instead of $HTTP_POST_VARS, $SERVER instead of $HTTP_SERVER_VARS, etc.

Turning on register_globals would be a convenient way to confirm this theory. If turning it on allows the code to work, then you know that's the issue and can make the above alterations, then turn it back off again.

I wish I could, but the code is not mine. What's really strange to me is that I have been able to use this software for several years now with no problems at all on my local server and on my remote server. I didn't have problems until I tried to upgrade to the latest version. That will work on my remote server, but not the local one. Which makes it a little harder to customize the templates and such...

Your reference to the code made me go back and check again. The code I copied earlier is from version 5.1.4. I am trying to upgrade to 6.1.2. The globallib.php file from THAT version looks like this:

I think that addresses the problem you brought up. Thing is, this script isn't the only one I'm having a problem with and that's why I think I am going to have to go back to square one and reinstall. Apache2 and MySQL 4.1.23 aren't the problem, PHP IS.

I had PHP4.3.2RC3 on my local machine and upgraded to PHP5 because that is what is on my new remote server. But I guess I did a bad and installed using the Windows installer (.msi). I uninstalled that and checked for any left over files and then reinstalled PHP5 from the zip file. THAT didn't work so I uninstalled and went back to PHP4. And that's been a problem too... So I gave up and went and peeled and sliced some of the bushels of apples I'm trying to can... :queasy:

I'll try again tomorrow while the applesauce and apple pie filling are being processed in the canner.

Yes, because the default setting for the php.ini [man]register_globals[/man] setting changed from "on" to "off" with the release of PHP 4.2. If you upgraded from a pre-4.2 version using the default settings, then there will be a difference. There could also be a difference between later versions if one had register_globals explicitly turned on during installation and the other did not. If you cannot change the code itself, then your options are to either turn on register_globals at the system level (the php.ini file) or locally via a .htaccess file.

Since my last post, I've peeled some apples, pondered, gone to bed, got up, played some more with apples and pondered some more...

I went back and reinstalled PHP5 and reconfigured MySQL. This time, I followed the directions a little more carefully (and you thought only men had that problem...:evilgrin: ). Wonder of wonders, when I restarted the server, PHP loaded without a single error! I very nearly fell out of my chair in shock! Then I went back and started over with phpmyadmin and that installed without a hitch!

(The Next Generation of Genealogy Site Building (TNG) is a specialized cms for online family trees.)

I carefully went back and copied over all my genealogy files to the local website directory. Setup worked just fine and I was able to repopulate the database. I even can get to the admin page. BUT... when I try to access the front page, I'm served up a blank page. (http://larleetree.selfip.org). I'm wondering if I'm still having some include problems.

The include_path in the php.ini file now reads:

include_path = ".;\e:\webserver\php\includes;\e:\websites"

I just don't get it... But tomorrow's another day. Two steps forward one step back.

On the page that is giving you a blank page, could you put:

error_reporting(E_ALL);

at the very first line of that file? That should give you any error messages - it's normally an error that causes the page to stop processing, but without error reporting turned on, it just throws a blank page.

Actually, that's not necessary, Horizon. I think I must have missed a step or something. I went through all the steps again and was able to get TNG to work properly. And the install file DID say to follow exactly. That will teach me to install something when I'm not fully awake, aware, and not thinking about other stuff!
