Form Post Fields Array Limit

Hi,

I have a form that allows users to add line entries into a database. However, after adding quite a few lines, it no longer seems to allow any more to be added. So my question is, is there a limit to how many fields you can have in an array of fields that are being posted in a form and if so, is there any way around it?

There is no such limit that I'm aware of. Could you give us an example of your script? In particular how you are submitting this to your database? Are you getting any errors?

A simplified version of the code is below. Basically it lists all records in the database with a field to add a new record at the bottom. But once a certain number have been added, it allows no more. Existing ones are shown and changes can be made but the new one just doesn't get submitted.

At a glance, shouldn't this:

while ($data = mysql_fetch_array($result))

be this:

while ($data = mysql_fetch_array($result, MYSQL_ASSOC))

The code is displaying them ok. It's just once there's a certain number, can't add anymore and I'm thinking this is because it's not posting the data through due to some kind of limit to what can be posted. Can't think why else it would work and then just stop once there's a lot of them.

The only feasible limit is based on memory, so it is got to be something else. Does it always stop at the same number of records? how many records is a lot? Have you tried running the query directly in the sql console?

Well, if you limit is around, say, 32,000 you might be having a limitation in your numbering scheme. Change the column type from Integer to Big_Int. Otherwise without knowing your database schema nor your PHP insert code, I have no other ideas.

Ok, let me expand a bit more. There is a form, and the form has quite a few fields. Between 75 and 100 other fields, and then this list of fields that expands as more items are added. Think along the lines of configuring a product for an ecommerce system and that product that you're configuring can have options on it such as size, colour, etc... What I have found is that the form post after a number of records are added to this unlimited list of options no longer includes more fields in the post. So once there's quite a few - say 80-100 options, then any data in the fields below these arrays of options do not show in a print_r($_POST) - so the fields values are just disappearing and not getting sent.

I see, it looks like a configuration issue, try to echo the post_max_size:

echo ini_get('post_max_size');
//The default is 8M

Additionally it could be your web server the one imposing the restriction.
