Well, the most common open source (and free of charge) version control systems in use are CVS and Subversion. Personally, I use Bazaar, but its complementary tool maturity leaves much to be desired at this point of time.
You could consider reading Better SCM Initiative, and note the criticism against Visual Source Safe. Of course, be aware that this analysis is partisan, and terms in the comparison may be interpreted different by different people.
