FTP with source control

I was wondering if someone knows of a good FTP app which will allow checkout control.

I have the problem that both myself and another guy in different country are working on a (php based) project but are having trouble keeping track of who's working on which files at any particular time.

Dreamweaver does this checkout pretty well but its not ideal for developing php in and a standalone FTP app which does this would be ideal...

any help much appreciated!

I remember dream weaver integrates with Adobe's contribute for version management. If you run a search on this forum for version control you will come across a variety of choices, one of the most popular ones is CVS which is used by Zend Studio.
