[RESOLVED] A simple while loop wont work for me

Hi all,
Thanks for reading!

Im very very new to php. One of my first scripts doesnt work. Very short, heres the error.

Warning: mysql_fetch_assoc(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/john724/public_html/test/third.php on line 18

Here is my code:

$link = mysql_connect("localhost", "USERNAME", "PASSWORD");
mysql_select_db("john724_product");

$query = 'SELECT * FROM products';
$results = mysql_query($query);
while ($box = mysql_fetch_assoc($results)) {
echo $box;
}
mysql_close($link);

?>

What am I doing wrong here?

You need to pass $link to mysql_select_db("john724_product"); as a second parameter. Also note that $box is an associative array so to call its values you must do:

echo $box['columnName'];

Im not sure what you mean, a second parameter. I did give ['columnName'].
Still get the same warning though.

Okay. Yup thats what I thought. So Ive tried that (since you mentioned it) but I still get the warning.

Yes I know what line 18 contains, but your message is saying that $result is not a valid parameter for the function in line 18, therefore we got to diagnose why $result doesn't contain the value that mysql_fetch_assoc() expects.

great, well now all you have to do is supply valid database name, host, user name and password.

john724_product is the db name. products is the table and products and the columns are product and id.

Maybe this isnt meant to be. All info is correct. this is the same info as is in my config.php for my site. exact same everything.

Then you need to look into user privileges for the database are trying to access. I'm sorry I couldn't help you further.

thank you very much. I still dont understand this but its closer.

I have found many php and mysql tutorials on google and they are also very helpful.

The thing I dont like is that for every example ive seen there is nothing real.

example. . .

generic function and a few lines down they make the generic function say mark fish bread . ..

what the heck? I need to know how to make stuff like this work. These have been my first steps toward a product filtration menu for customer specific needs.

Everything you are doing is correct. your issue is the database management system, there are some restrictions for the user that you are using that prevent said user from accessing your database. Try to google for mysql user privileges or if you have phpmyadmin available check on the privileges for said user.

It turned up a value. Not sure where it came from. Its a 0: . You were right about permissions. In all the madness I completely forgot to actually add the use to the db. Sorry bout that.

Now, where did 0: come from?
