.htaccess and php

Hi, i'm having a little problem using .htaccess to password protect directories...
if i put a .htaccess and .htpasswd in a directory then my php stops working! but the .htaccess does work...
here what the web browser displays
Server error!

The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Either the server is overloaded or there was an error in a CGI script.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

There are things you are allowed to do and things you are not allowed to do with .htaccess. Your error log will tell you exactly why your .htaccess doesnt work. My quess is that your webhost has not allowed "AuthConfig" directive for you in apache.

Can you show us the .htaccess file you used that gave this error?

Also, can you tell us the absolute paths to the .htaccess file and .htpasswd files?
