how to check if my memcache is running?

installed pear memcache module and now i dont know if this thing is working.
is there a script or something to tell if my memcache is working?

According to the manual chapter on [man]memcache[/man] there is a function to get its status, but you'd need to upgrade memcache.

The statistics functions would presumably not give any useful information if it's not running.
