[RESOLVED] High Traffic

Hi there

I need some help here if anyone would be kind enough to guide me.

I am designing a website for a client. I am assuming there will be a high volume of database connection at times. I need to know, is there a way to avoid connection failure or denial to the database and the site?

How do does people do it with a high volume of traffic?

Is there a way to connect to different servers for database? or even is it needed to be this way?

I appreciate you help.

The first thing is to think over your database structure, so that you optimise the speed of sql queries (proper indexing etc.). The next step is load balancing (that's what many servers for one database is all about). If you look up this term in google it should spit out some useful links.

I've moved this thread to the Database forum since that seems to be the main area of concern.

Unless you're working with some ancient hardware, I would recommend you first look at optimizing your database structure and queries as mentioned. Enable slow query logging and look for your longest queries, then examine why they are taking as long as they are (if you have questions, you should feel free to post these queries and perhaps the corresponding slow query log entry).

There are also tools out there to stress test your website (generate multiple simultaneous connections). Enable logging in PHP and in MySQL and then perform these tests; watch your error logs for any sign of trouble.

Well Thanks guys.

1) Is there any stress tools that you cloud suggest?

2) Would it be better if I used flat file for the tables that I think would have high access rate?

3) Load balancing; I am going to look at this now and get back to you asking more questions probably.

Theres one thing that you can do also. Use caching. There are many cache systems for you to choose from if you dont want to create your own(and I really dont see a point reinventing the wheel). One that I have used is PEAR Cache lite. Other one that I tested briefly is Zend Framework's cache. They both do the same but I have had very good experience with the Cache lite. Using cache system can drastically change the performance of your site.

But ofcourse, proper indexing and database design are the most important thing to do first.

EDIT: Caching is the solution to your question number 2 🙂

No. You'd essentially be developing your own database system; I'd rather use a DB such as MySQL which has had years of testing and experience/bug fixes rather than make up some system from scratch.

How high traffic are you expecting? It might be that what you consider high traffic is not that high.

according to my client around 700 to 1000 accessing database for the same thing at ones.

I am not familiar of what a server is capable of that is why I asked a question hear and sorry to bothered you.

Cahva, coming back to PEAR Cache lite. Would it be difficult to implement to existing php pages? Or how does it work? I am new to the net please forgive my ignorance if my question are simple and funny to some.

I don't feel like you bothered me, sorry if I gave that impression. I was only trying to get a little more information to be able to give better help. Some people tend to think that 10 logged in users at a time will create much traffic, I just wanted to make sure that you were not one of them.

Normally you can divide the traffic that the client/seller estimates with 10 and get an estimate of the real traffic. That equals about 100 simultanous database connections, which I still consider quite high. Of course that math might be wrong in this case, I can't say.

Database design and indexes are always worth thinking about, but I doubt that you have to worry about load balancing.

Theres was examples in the link that I gave you but heres straight link to the introduction:

I have added caching afterwards for couple of sites. Its not hard but that really depends how you have made your site in the firstplace 🙂

Basically what you do is:
- check if cache exists:
If yes, print the cache.
If no, create the cache

when something is changed in database, clear the cache.

One thing I will contribute is to plan for failure as well,
in case of connection failure, your server should handle the error instead of just letting it sit and hang.
Something as simple as a "if (!mysql_connect(blah)) header("Location: error.php")";
A default connection failed page, and then you can take it from there

I am reading about what was suggested in the thread about Cache. I am assuming this is the less costly and time consuming method.
