Sending email in PHP

I want to install PHP 5.2.5 on an Open SuSE 10.2 with Apache and MySQL. I also want to enable SMTP (and maybe IMAP?) for PHP.
The question is do I need to install anything before compile PHP? I've used the default Linux installation method, but I myself specified some additional packages (such as gcc, etc) to install.

Doesn't Suse use the Yast package manager?

In which case don't you just select the pacakages you want and it sorts out the dependences for you.

I've used Yast for installing OS, but for AMP, I want to compile them from their sources. Now what do I need to install (via Yast or other packages) to enable sending email in PHP?

To send email you'll need postfix or sendmail. and then alter your php.ini to use it.
