Server hanging up

I am running Apache/PHP/MySQL (can't remember versions but not latest as these will not run under 98) under Windows 98 on a stand alone PC with no web access and no networking. (The same PHP pages run fine on my XP computer running latest versions...but I can't upgrade the older one).

The application is on about 20 pages of PHP

The system hangs up roughly (but irregularly) every 15 page calls. It says either 'Searching for website' or Website found...loading' and eventually times out. The timeout period has not been altered by changing timeout parameters in PHP.ini.

Searching suggests that perhaps the server is using an external port (80?) when it would be better using an internal connection. Problem is I do not know how to do that, or if that is the cause.

Any advice would be much appreciated

There was, originally and I cannot upgrade as no CD drive!

Honestly: convert that box to linux. Windows 98 was not meant to be a server of any kind. The best step forward is to switch it to a linux box and install a LAMP package. Use Fedora or centOS or ubuntu if you want. Almost any linux box distro will do.

As for the pages hanging up, it could just be that the server takes too long to process certain things. Sometimes it gets bogged down from other services that aren't needed trying to take some resources.

I thought I said that, because I figured that windows 98 was just being a load of garbage, but apparently my post didn't go through. I had a terrible wifi connection earlier at school.

Yeah, get a five dollar cd drive and load a lamp stack on that.

Cheers, guys (& gals?). I will give that some thought but this is a working all day system and the hassles of setting up the server plus output to printer etc etc took ages so I am not keen to open that can of worms.

If it's a working all-day system, why not upgrade to a real server OS like Windows Server or at least Windows 2000. Much more stable and not putting resources toward a desktop display but toward a real server. Hence why linux is better: no GUI on most servers to hog resources, plus each app is optimized for each system.

If your server is "lagging" and hanging up, and you're still running Win 98, it may be time to look into upgrading the physical server as well.
