Website and Internet site

Hi,

In my everyday life I speak French, and more and more, the term "site Web" (website) is replaced with "site Internet" (Internet site). I don't remember having heard or read it in English... am I right ? Also, you, English speakers and programmers, what do you think of "Internet site" ? Does it make sense to you ? To me, it doesn't !

Wow, suntra, I never would have picked up on the fact that english wasn't your native language from your other posts. (edit; that may come across as sarcastic, but I'm being sincere :/)

And I suppose internet site would imply a broader range of features, as in accessible from more than just "the web" - mobile phones, pdas, and the like, perhaps? Or possible that it serves up more than just "web" content - radio streams, possibly, come to mind. I've always used web site, myself.

Well, it's anything with "http://" or "www" !

Facebook is an Internet site...
Our #1 TV channel (Radio-Canada) has its Internet site...

We often hear "visit our Internet site at..." (in French, of course !)

Etc... So I think it's mainly used to describe many pages linked together... a Website... 😛

Probably someone in marketing somewhere thought that made it sound more technical or something? I guess that technically the "world-wide web" is a subset of the internet, n'est-ce pas? So, I suppose it would not be incorrect to call a web site an internet site, though it might suggest more functionality than is actually there.

'Internet site' makes sense to me

Makes me think, 'A site (referring to web-site) on the internet'.

I think it may have been more along the lines of not everyone would say "website" or have a direct translation to a website. So to be clear as to what you're speaking about (a site on the internet) the easier to translate "internet site" was used. Just how things evolved I guess.

But then again, I've heard it both ways around here (Maryland). Some people talk about Internet Sites, and then some people have a slip of the tongue and say "Intranet Sites" when they mean internet.

Either way (internet vs web), it all means the same thing 🙂

I feel the same way! Internet, Web, Website, Web site... Its all the same...

It depends how pedantic you want to be.

Internet: the global network of networks
internet: an interconnected set of networks
World Wide Web: the part of the Internet that uses HTTP (and HTML and related technologies)
Web: World Wide Web
web: the thing that spiders weave
