[RESOLVED] $_FILES - redisplay selected file

Hi,

This is something that's been bugging me for a while so I thought I'd finally ask.

If a user uploads a file via a form and it fails some validation I want to be able to keep the value in the 'file' form field when I redisplay the page with the error. It's a doddle with normal text fields but I can't seem to find the answer for a 'file' field.

You can't find the answer because there is none; neither HTML nor client-side scripting (ex. Javascript) is allowed to alter a 'file' element as it's considered a security risk.

For example... what if it was allowed, and I had hidden FILE elements on a page and pre-filled the values with random file paths? I would be able to secretly grab files from your computer and you'd never know.

I don't think the full path gets passed in the post data, so the best you could do would be to output just the file name, which probably is not much use. In a way this makes sense from a security standpoint, as you probably do not want the directory structure of your PC being transmitted around the web.
