Question : php and files . open read and write

Hello guys

this is my second thread that i start it here , as a new guy in this forum , and php programing , i dont want to disturb you or make you feel bad because of me

the fact is , learning is exciting and i am excited , when i read something .. i just get an idea and want to try it , as i mentioned before in another topic i have a goal ... making a cms ... for me ... but i want it opensource so i can share it with others

a cms for public is not easy , i need to know more things about servers compatibility and features , i dont want to focus on learning things that i think going to work well in a cms but then face the fact that that thing or php function / code can not run on many servers .. because of the server software or the php compiler configuration ( disabling )

my question is , how good is the fopen and fclose .. in php , is it available on all servers , or some servers disabled or restrict it

as i know , it can not be off ... i seen many cms or website using php to create files , and just for example the thumbnails functions

a shorter version of the above : " can i depend on using open read write to create files and edit them on the server using php , or avoid it ?"

Some hosts do block fopen. GoDaddy used to, but I don't think they do anymore. Any good host won't and will block the main functions like passthru and exec.

At least since August of 2006, Godaddy does not block fopen.

I don't see why anyone would want to block fopen()... that's just ridiculous! Sure, they might disable allow_url_fopen, but if so, I would think it's because they're forcing you to use the [man]cURL[/man] extension.

If you're talking about using fopen() to read files on the server itself, I wouldn't worry too much about compatibility. If you're talking about using fopen() to read data from URL's, then I would say first check if [man]cURL/man is enabled. If not, try to retrieve data (e.g. by using [man]file_get_contents/man). If that fails, throw an error message explaining that your application needs to access information across an HTTP connection yet the server is preventing it.
