Hello... quick question about the industry

Hi,

I am new to the forums. I've been doing PHP off and on for about six years.

My question is a bit unusual, but I wasn't sure exactly where to post it. Currently, I have a well-paying part-time gig that is paying the bills. However, I'd like to expand to take on outside contract work. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do this. I'm good with php and mysql (About six years experience), but since the part-time gig is great hours and good pay, I don't want to take on anything full-time. Also, I'm terrible with design and I don't really want to deal with end-users.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about landing part-time freelance work in PHP? Places to look? I've picked up a smallish client here and there on craigslist, but several haven't paid and the ones that have have not led to more work. Any ideas?

Look for web design companies that need somebody to add extra functionality?

Contact local companies involved in web dev, job centers, join the php mailing list for your area. I found it fairly easy to find part time flexible work. Thats what i need while being a student. I know various people that need people but i just don't have the time.

I guess it depends a bit where you are based in the world?

What is the php mailing list?

I'm located in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

I can take on quite a bit of work so long as I can set my own hours (the part-time gig I'm scheduling around is 8-10 am every day and 3-9 pm tues / thurs, so I can't really do a full-time thing), so hopefully as I try more and more I'll get a bit of buzz going.

Good idea on contacting local companies in the area.

Surely there must be some job website you can look things too. I've found plenty for the uk/scotland

I dig your website. Its gorgeous. Might want to run a spellchecker is the only thing, but that could just be language differences across the Atlantic. But its really nice.

Yeah, hopefully I can find a contract PHP-type job website for the States. I've used CL, but with mixed results. Anyway, thanks for the help!

most of PHP coding is dealing with end-user (HTML output) designs. You might want to improve this.
