im using php designer 2007 and when i try to enter a newline command in the code. it doesnt work. ive tried code from several places and when i preview them in php designer they dont come out formatted right. do you think its the software or something else?

Well, what do you mean "dont[sic] come out formatted right"? Do you see a literal backslash followed by an 'n', or is there simply no line break?

If the former of the two is the case, make sure you used double quotes as your string delimiter in PHP (as this is the only time the backslash escape sequences are rendered as special characters). If the latter is the case, then you might consider that browsers (I don't know about PHP Designer) don't look for line feeds ("\n" in PHP) to separate lines; instead, when rendering HTML, they look for the <br> HTML entity.

there is just simply no line break. so if i just wanted to use php to output text directly to the browser, i would have to use html to insert line breaks?

Yes, if you're outputting text to a browser and you expect to see a line break, you'd need to use <br> instead of \n .
