Does SSL encryption happen automatically?

I am just to confirm, if you run your scripts on an SSL (https) enabled server, do you have to do anything on your side to take advantage of the encryption or does it automatically encrypt between the users browser and the server?

I believe that the encryption does happen automatically ... some quick googling seems to agree
