Help needed with writing a script to move content from one database to another?

Hi there,
I have a website where i have been inserting content through phpadmin and now i have decied to go with joomla.

The problem is that i have quite alot of content in the non-cms database which i would like to move over to joomla database without doing it manually.

Can someone give an example of how i would go about this? Lets assume, i have a table called Articles with fields such as author, title, description and text. For the moment imagine that these fields map out perfectly to joomlas. Am only concerned now about how to move data from one DB to another, i never done this before and not sure where to start.

Please show us what you have tried already. I just assume that you did try it yourself before asking for help, right?

no i havnt tried, yet 🙂 can you describe the steps and i will try to piece together the neccessary script. i know the simple stuff like creating and conneting to DB, retrieving and displaying tables, insert and updates comands, etc.

I suggest that you try for yourself first, and we will help with more specific questions. Just asking us to do the work is rude.

If you are not sure come with an idea how to solve it and ask if someone have a better idea. Then code, and ask when you have specific questions.

You could:

Use PHPMyAdmin to export the table to a .sql file.
Use PHPMyAdmin to import that table from the .sql file into the Joomla database.

Use PHPMyAdmin to run a query something like:

INSERT INTO joomla_table (col1, col2, col3) SELECT col1, col2, col3 FROM imported_tabe

Upon success and testing to verify it copied all the data, drop the imported table.
