This morning, Sun Microsystems announced plans to acquire MySQL AB.

Eh, MySQL has been great, but a nice software giant like Sun coming in and taking over could be nice. While I love MySQL, it's darn annoying that some of their tools don't really follow a good development timeline.

As long as MySQL doesn't turn into a java based RDBMS, I think it will be fine 😛

No way for me to know for sure how it will affect the future of MySQL; but as Sun has historically been committed to supporting a number of open-source technologies, I feel a lot better that it's them buying it as opposed to just about any other major IT corporation out there.

Since PHP is a competitor for Java, I am hoping the PHP devs don't take the merger personally:

"This is really about one thing: reaffirming Sun's position at the center of the Web," Schwartz said. "We view ourselves as a platform for the Web economy and we certainly believe and can demonstrate that we have the hottest products and platforms."

Indifferent. Haven't cared about mysql for years. Nor Java. $1B is ridiculously overpriced. Haven't cared about Sun for years either, for that matter.

Sun Microsystems' $1 billion acquisition of open source database vendor mysql, what will it mean to us who use mysql now? good news，right?

Last time Sun Micro bought the Cobalt means bad to me. My new Cobalt server was out of support in short time, and no new updates from that product line. Plus, due to Cobalt RAQ servers were out of market, I had hard time to find big local good hosting companies support Interbase/firebird any more. I have to switch all my interbase sites to mysql sites.

Whether you care about mysql or not, you have to agree, it is a substantial part of the web industry today. There is a MUCH larger number of servers out there for hosting running mysql vs psql. FWIW, I use both here at work and like them both.

I do not, however, like JAVA, but that has no bearing on the mysql side of things. According to articles, they will keep the M in LAMP strong and keep it there.

So? Winblows has large marketshare too and that doesn't mean it's good. 😛

I am however mildly interested to see what sort of competition develops between Sun and Oracle now, re: mysql.
