XP Activation mid-pc crisis!

Gahh!

Has anyone else experienced this problem before?

I've recently had to re-install XP onto my system because of a condition I like to call "The girlfriend". Installing all of these tycoon games turned my computer into a slow moving hamster.

Once the install finished, I activated straight away and all was well.. Until this morning, when I was unkindly greeted by a dialog saying that I need to activate windows 😕

I chose to activate it. The lovely "Windows Product Activation" window popped up and informed me that I was being a dumbass because "Windows is already activated", then proceeded to log me out.

In safe mode, I system restored to yesterday. But now, I'm being told that I'm a dumbass again, because my "Windows Product" needs to be activated within 7 days!

I decided, "oh, well... I'll try it again now", and BAM! Turns out I'm apparently being a dumbass again because "Windows is already activated"

I'm supposed to be at a bank meeting today (not a bad one, but a good one), but now I'm forced to back everything up should I need to re-install! (Take 2)

Yep 🙁 Still nothing at all. 4 Days left to activate now apparently.

I think i'm just going to wait for it to run out and see what happens (Got all my data backed up anyway)

That has certianly looked like a good option to me. I've been playing about with ubuntu over the past few days, and I really do love it. But it's a bit of a learning curve after growing up around dos and windows.

I shall let you know what I decide to do! 🙂

If you decide to take the dive and use Ubuntu on it, feel free to ask me for help if you need it. Ubuntu is what I run on my two primary machines and I run CentOS 5 on my server boxes. I'm no expert, but I've done enough of it that I can probably help you out some if you get stuck.

You may want to call M$ customer service. Perhaps they can provide you with some sort of reset code or such?

Ditto. I use xubuntu on my laptop where I do all my work and have a desktop running xp that I vnc into to check my sites in Internet Explorer. I have kubuntu on my backup laptop which also works great. All the ubuntus seem to be easier than windows these days - especially vista.

I'm guessing weed's the same as me - he's read them all straight through at least once, then googles "xkcd [phrase]" to get the specific comic when he wants to link them. 😛 I do it more frequently with explosm's comics, though.
