Separating pictures from content in database

Hi, I was curious if separating images from content(from a listing for example) in a different table is better for some reason. I have seen programmers doing it and was wondering why.

form follows function in db design
you could have mulitple pictures per content and therefore they need to be independent of the content table.
read up on database relationships, one to one, one to may, many to many
this should give you some insight into what they are doing
